Xavier,Melissa O.; Soares,Mauro P.; Meinerz,Ana Raquel M.; Nobre,Márcia O.; Osório,Luiza G.; Silva Filho,Rodolfo P. da; Meireles,Mário Carlos A..
The article describes the epidemiology, macroscopic and histological lesions as well as the isolation of Aspergillus flavus and A. fumigatus from Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) during recovery in the Center for Recovery of Marine Animals (CRAM - 32ºS/52ºW), over a period of two years. From January 2004 to December 2005 the Center received 52 Magellanic penguins, and 23% (12/52) died. Necropsies were performed and tissue samples were collected for histological and microbiological examination. From 12 dead animals, aspergillosis was confirmed in five animals, corresponding to 42% of the mortality. Granulomatous nodules were observed mainly on air sacs and lungs. Histologically, septate and branching hyphae, measuring 3-5 µm and PAS positive...

Brazilian version of the Berg balance scale BJMBR
Miyamoto,S.T.; Lombardi Junior,I.; Berg,K.O.; Ramos,L.R.; Natour,J..
The purpose of the present study was to translate and adapt the Berg balance scale, an instrument for functional balance assessment, to Brazilian-Portuguese and to determine the reliability of scores obtained with the Brazilian adaptation. Two persons proficient in English independently translated the original scale into Brazilian-Portuguese and a consensus version was generated. Two translators performed a back translation. Discrepancies were discussed and solved by a panel. Forty patients older than 65 years and 40 therapists were included in the cultural adaptation phase. If more than 15% of therapists or patients reported difficulty in understanding an item, that item was reformulated and reapplied. The final Brazilian version was then tested on 36...

Clinical biochemistry of rescued Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus): serum or heparinized plasma? Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Morais,J.; Volpato,J.; Costa,A.; Kolesnikovas,C.; Souza,M.; Saito,M..
ABSTRACT In the last few years, an increasing number of debilitated Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) has been rescued and taken to rehabilitation centers on Brazil’s southern coast to be clinically treated and evaluated for re-introduction. This work aims to compare the viability of heparinized plasma with the viability of serum for biochemistry analyses under rehabilitation conditions. Blood sampled from 31 physically healthy rescued penguins was processed into serum/plasma-paired samples and analyzed for 12 biochemical parameters: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), cholesterol (CHOL), creatine kinase (CK), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), glucose, (GLU) lactate dehydrogenase...

Economics and politics of water resources development: Uda Walawe Irrigation Project, Sri Lanka AgEcon
Molle, Francois; Renwick, Mary E..
The Uda Walawe Irrigation and Resettlement Project (UWIRP) located in the Southern dry zone of Sri Lanka was initiated in the early 1950s. The original plan for the UWIRP was a highly ambitious social, economic and physical engineering project aimed at creating a modern, profitable agriculture sector. This report examines the history of water resources development and investment decisions for the UWIRP over a period of 50 years and uncovers underlying processes that shaped the evolution of the project and highlights the limitation of viewing development as a mere set of technical and social engineering endeavors.

Effect of treadmill gait on bone markers and bone mineral density of quadriplegic subjects BJMBR
Carvalho,D.C.L.; Garlipp,C.R.; Bottini,P.V.; Afaz,S.H.; Moda,M.A.; Cliquet Jr.,A..
Quadriplegic subjects present extensive muscle mass paralysis which is responsible for the dramatic decrease in bone mass, increasing the risk of bone fractures. There has been much effort to find an efficient treatment to prevent or reverse this significant bone loss. We used 21 male subjects, mean age 31.95 ± 8.01 years, with chronic quadriplegia, between C4 and C8, to evaluate the effect of treadmill gait training using neuromuscular electrical stimulation, with 30-50% weight relief, on bone mass, comparing individual dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry responses and biochemical markers of bone metabolism. Subjects were divided into gait (N = 11) and control (N = 10) groups. The gait group underwent gait training for 6 months, twice a week, for 20 min,...

The Loess Plateau, situated in north-west China, has been subjected to degradation of vegetation owing to overgrazing. In order to clarify the effects of grazing and cutting on vegetation and productivity of shrub-steppe, the study was carried out from May in 1989 to October in 1991 in the Pastoral Preserving Zone of Yunwu Mountain. The vegetation was monthly surveyed, and DM weights of dominant species were separately measured. Soil samples were taken at three selected sites and one overgrazed site and these chemical analysis were made. Relative abundance of species was calculated on the base of the total frequency of 7835. Gramineae showed the highest value (26 %), followed by Compositae (24 %) and Leguminosae (12 %). During 3 experimental years, the...

Financing irrigation services: a literature review and selected case studies from Asia AgEcon
Small, Leslie E.; Adriano, Marietta S.; Martin, Edward D.; Bhatia, Ramesh; Shim, Young K.; Pradhan, Prachanda.
This study results from a two years' intensive research into a hitherto unexplored area of irrigation management - the aspect of financing irrigation in some Asian countries. The authors have analyzed the relationship between investment costs, level of irrigation fees, cropping intensity, type of crop, and secondary income. The studies conclude that the quality of irrigation system operations and maintenance is affected not only by the amount of resources made available to operate and maintain systems, but also by the institutional arrangements under which they are provided.

Forest Landscape Restoration in the Drylands of Latin America Ecology and Society
Newton, Adrian C; Bournemouth University, Bournemouth, UK; anewton@bournemouth.ac.uk; Premoli, Andrea C; Laboratorio Ecotono, Universidad Nacional del Comahue, Bariloche, Argentina; andrea.premoli@gmail.com.
Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) involves the ecological restoration of degraded forest landscapes, with the aim of benefiting both biodiversity and human well-being. We first identify four fundamental principles of FLR, based on previous definitions. We then critically evaluate the application of these principles in practice, based on the experience gained during an international, collaborative research project conducted in six dry forest landscapes of Latin America. Research highlighted the potential for FLR; tree species of high socioeconomic value were identified in all study areas, and strong dependence of local communities on forest resources was widely encountered, particularly for fuelwood. We demonstrated that FLR can be achieved through both...

Functional assesment of patients with AIDS disease BJID
Zonta,Marise Bueno; Almeida,Sérgio Monteiro de; Carvalho,Mirian T. M. de; Werneck,Lineu César.
We documented the types and degree of functional disability in 74 patients with AIDS at the Hospital de Clínicas of the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. Few of these patients are referred for rehabilitation services and there is only a limited team approach in their care. We found that 91% of the patients had some degree of functional impairment; in 81% the complaint was weakness and in 47% it was neurological involvement. According to the Barthel Index, 79% were considered functionally independent, 14% partially dependent and 7% dependent. For most of them, independence requires effort and their quality of life is reduced. Severe disability was rather unusual, while mild or moderate disability levels were not. The functional physical disability found...

Growth and nutritional status of Brazilian wood species Cedrella fissilis and Anadenanthera peregrina in bauxite spoil in response to arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation and substrate amendment BJM
Tótola,Marcos Rogério; Borges,Arnaldo Chaer.
The growth of Cedrella fissilis Vell. (Cedro Rosa) and of Anadenanthera peregrina Benth (Angico Vermelho) in bauxite spoil was studied to evaluate their response to substrate amendment or to inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The plants were grown in bauxite spoil, topsoil or spoil amended with either topsoil or compost, and inoculated with the AMF Acaulospora scrobiculata, Gigaspora margarita or Glomus etunicatum. Root colonization was highly dependent on the interaction plant-fungus-substrate. In C. fissilis, root colonization by Gigaspora margarita dropped from 75% in bauxite spoil to only 4% in topsoil. Contrarily, root colonization of A. peregrina by the same fungus increased from 48% in spoil to 60% in topsoil. Root colonization of...

Impact of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act on Rubber Block Plantation Scheme in Tripura AgEcon
Sharma, Gaurav; Joseph, Joby; Tharian, George K.; Dey, S.K..
Among the various promotional schemes targeted for the promotion of rubber in Tripura, Block Plantation Scheme (BPS) has been introduced exclusively for the rehabilitation of scheduled tribes and scheduled castes. BPS is a comprehensive scheme with the characteristic features of group/community approach in all spheres of operations up to primary processing and marketing and family labour participation as wage labour during the immature phase of the plantations spanning six years. However, there has been a distortion in the uninterrupted supply of family labour to the scheme in the recent past due to growing popularity of employment opportunities under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA) programme, which may eventually...

Induction of a geochemical barrier for As, Fe and S immobilization in a sulfide substrate Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Assis,Igor Rodrigues de; Dias,Luiz Eduardo; Ribeiro Jr,Emerson Silva; Abrahão,Walter Antônio Pereira; Mello,Jaime Wilson Vargas de; Veloso,Renato Welmer.
Acid mine drainage (AMD) is an environmental concern due to the risk of element mobilization, including toxic elements, and inclusion in the food chain. In this study, three cover layers were tested to minimize As, Fe and S mobilization from a substrate from former gold mining, containing pyrite and arsenopyrite. For this purpose, different layers (capillary break, sealant and cover layer) above the substrate and the induction of a geochemical barrier (GB) were used to provide suitable conditions for adsorption and co-precipitation of the mobilized As. Thirteen treatments were established to evaluate the leaching of As, Fe and S from a substrate in lysimeters. The pH, As, Fe, S, Na, and K concentrations and total volume of the leachates were determined....

Irrigation sector in Sri Lanka: Recent investment trends and the development path ahead AgEcon
Kikuchi, Masao; Barker, Randolph; Weligamage, Parakrama; Samad, Madar.
Increasing the area under irrigation and the widespread adoption of seed-fertilizer technology were the major factors that contributed to enhanced rice production in Sri Lanka, enabling the country to achieve self-sufficiency in rice. In recent years, there has been a shift in emphasis from expanding the irrigated land base to enhancing the productivity of irrigated land through diversification of agriculture and improvement of rice production, with better water management in irrigation schemes. This report attempts to assess how the irrigation sector in Sri Lanka is adapting itself to these new challenges. It analyzes the future direction of irrigation in Sri Lanka in light of recent trends in public and private investment in this sphere, and the...
